Argument essay

Argument essay scored 4/6 — with fixes

Score: 4/6

Prompt (paraphrased): Some people argue that failure is a more valuable teacher than success. Write an essay that develops your position on the relationship between failure and learning.

The essay

Failure is a more valuable teacher than success. When people fail, they learn what not to do, and this helps them improve. Success does not teach as much because when things go well, people do not think about why. Failure is therefore the better teacher.

One example is Thomas Edison, who failed thousands of times before inventing the light bulb. Every time a filament failed, he learned something new. If he had given up after the first failure, he never would have succeeded. This shows that failure helped him learn and eventually reach his goal. Without all those failures, there would be no light bulb.

Another example is sports. When a team loses a game, the players watch the film and see what they did wrong. Then they practice those things and get better for the next game. A team that always wins might get overconfident and stop trying as hard. This is why failure can be more useful than winning all the time.

In my own life, I failed a math test once and it taught me to study harder. After that I started doing my homework every night and my grades improved. If I had passed the test easily, I would not have changed anything. So failure taught me a lesson that success never would have.

In conclusion, failure is a more valuable teacher than success because it shows people what they need to fix. Edison, sports teams, and my own experience all prove that failure helps people learn and grow.

How it scores, row by row

Row A — Thesis

1/1

Clear, defensible position stated up front — it earns the thesis point. The limitation is that it accepts the prompt whole rather than finding any complexity in it.

Row B — Evidence & Commentary

3/4

Three developed examples (Edison, sports, personal) that are relevant and explained — a solid 3. It misses the 4 because the commentary repeats one idea ('failure shows what to fix') three times instead of deepening it; the examples are parallel rather than building on each other.

Row C — Sophistication

0/1

No sophistication point. The essay never considers that success can also teach, never qualifies its claim, and never addresses a counterargument — so the argument stays one-dimensional.

The takeaway

This essay's weakness is that it is too agreeable with itself. To reach a 6, concede that success can teach too, then argue that reflection is the real variable — the complexity is what earns Row C, and it also makes the evidence do more work.
