AP Lang Score Distribution & Pass Rate

In 2026, 15% of AP English Language and Composition test takers earned a 5 and 75% scored 3 or higher, according to the College Board. That is far above the 54%–63% pass rate the exam had every year from 2013 to 2024. Most of the jump came in 2025, when the College Board changed how it sets AP Lang score cut points.

Why scores jumped in 2025

For 2025, the College Board moved AP English Language to what it calls evidence-based standard setting. Earlier cut points were set by panels of about 15 college professors. The new method uses large-scale data instead: for AP Lang, 773 professors at 524 colleges compared the exam's difficulty with their own final exams. In the first year under the new method, the share scoring 3 or higher went from 54.6% to 74.3%, and the share earning a 5 went from 9.8% to 13.4%. 2026 stayed at about the same level (75% and 15%). Read the College Board's explanation of the 2025 change.

In practice, score guides written before 2025 that say “only about half pass” or “about 1 in 10 get a 5” describe the old scoring standard, not the current one.

AP Lang pass rate

“Passing” usually means a 3 or higher: 75% in 2026 and 74.3% in 2025. What matters for credit, though, is your target college's policy. Some grant credit for a 3, others require a 4 or 5, so check the specific school before deciding what score you are aiming for.
